More Information: In July of 1926, Anne Rittenhouse, fashion writer for McCall’s magazine commented on the decorative necklines that were in fashion: “The designers of women’s clothes, or perhaps the women themselves, grow weary of the wide oval opening at the neck. . . .It remains an occasional outline, but its trying severity is made gracious by decoration. Embroidery in silk or metal threads brightens it.” Although decorated with cotton cross-stitch instead of silk, the embroidery adds a bold texture and color to the dress, as does the two-toned double collar and V-neck, drawing your eye away from the severity and simple cut of the dress. Buttons once lined the V neck, but they have since been lost to time.
